William Allen Rowden of Plattsburgh, N.Y., passed away on Dec. 23, 2024, just before his 83rd birthday.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1942, Bill grew up in a military family. A standout athlete, he earned a football scholarship to the University of Illinois, where he met his future wife, Sara Gillespie. After a football injury ended his athletic career, he earned a degree in Kinesiology and joined the U.S. Air Force, becoming a decorated pilot during the Vietnam War. Known for his precision and leadership, Bill's achievements included earning the Strategic Air Command's "Fairchild Trophy." He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1987.
After serving as a commercial pilot, Bill found fulfillment teaching Physical Education at Northeast Clinton Central School until his retirement in 2009. He was also active in the community, enjoying golf, woodworking, fishing, and outdoor sports.
Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sara, his daughters, Kellie and Jennifer, and three grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held in May 2025. The family requests donations in Bill's memory be made to the Headstrong Project (www.headstrongproject.org).
