Sally Sears Mack Obituary

Sally Sears Mack died just shy of her 94th birthday. She and her husband, Donald R. Mack, who predeceased her, moved to Plattsburgh in the early 2000s. She quickly became active with the League of Women Voters, the Local EDC, the SUNY art gallery docents, and much more.

Before coming to Plattsburgh, the Macks lived in retirement in Truro, Mass., where Sally chaired the Board of Selectmen and served on the Barnstable County Assembly. An advocate for affordable housing, she spearheaded a successful effort to build 16 housing units in Truro on a road now named Sally's Way.

Her working years were devoted to nonprofit fundraising for Emma Willard School, Hopkins School, and Choate-Rosemary Hall, successively. But above all, her deepest love was music, and singing in particular. She attained mastery through training with Helen Boatwright, after attending the New England Conservatory of Music. Her skillful delivery and beautiful soprano voice received enthusiastic praise, even when she offered challenging new work by modern composers. Sally performed as a soloist and taught singing privately. She was a member of Schenectady's Etude Club, established the madrigal group Amici Cantorum, and directed the Unitarian Universalist choir for decades. At the age of 78, she wrote, "I think of myself as a musician and second as something else-and there have been many somethings else-in this long life."

Sally is succeeded by Mel Eisinger (Dom) and Meredith Mack, daughters, and Charlotte Mack and Frances Eisinger (Evan Foster), granddaughters. We sincerely thank dear family friends Martha Bachman, for an extraordinary level of spiritual and practical support, and Leroy Beshon, for his caring, watchful eye.

Sally's fully-lived life will be celebrated privately by her family. Those wishing to remember her might like to listen to Paul Hindemith's Das Marienlieben, one of Sally's all-time favorites.
