Nancy W. Sunderland, 87, of River Road, passed away a little after midnight, July 12th. Her parents were post-WWI German immigrants, Emil and Charlotte (Hermann) Walters. She was born in Brooklyn. Nancy's family bought a farm in Franklin when she was seven years old. She enjoyed rural living and the animals. She worked in the barn and fields with her father every day. After high school, she married Vincent of Canaan Hill.
Nancy earned her BA and did graduate studies at Plattsburgh SUNY. She taught at Southside Elementary until her retirement. She loved the children. She had a strong belief in education.
She raised a family and was proud of her old brick house in Peru. Nancy liked reading, gardening, painting and drawing. Later in life, she re-learned German, helped others at Literacy Volunteers, and spent time with her two grandchildren.
Nancy was kind, smart, strong, capable, and excelled at everything she did. She won a TV in an art contest in the 1950s. She won first prize in a cooking event at the Clinton County Fair in the 1970s. She successfully sold real estate on the side in the 1980s.
She is predeceased by a brother David, a sister Elsie, husband Vincent, daughter Diana, and son Michael. She leaves behind her son Kurt and his wife Margaret (Edwards), daughter-in-law Annie (Han), and grandchildren Matthew and Anna Lia.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru.
Donations in her memory may be made to Peru Free Library, Peru CSD Sunderland Memorial Scholarship, or Elmore SPCA.
