Martha Reinhaus Bennett Obituary
TICONDEROGA - Martha Reinhaus Bennett, died peacefully in Tucson, Ariz., April 16, 2014, at the age of 93. Mrs. Bennett was the widow of Dr. Milton Bennett. Martha was born in Westerkappeln, Germany, Feb. 2, 1921, to Ernst Reinhaus and Clara Block Reinhaus, and was a survivor of the Holocaust, leaving Germany in 1938 for London in the Kindertransport and then arriving two years later by convoy in the United States, joining her younger brother, the late Walter Reinhaus.. The Bennetts made their home on Lake George in Ticonderoga, N.Y., where for over 40 years Dr. Bennett maintained his optometric practice. After retirement, the couple spent their winters in Tucson, before moving to Saratoga in 2002. Martha returned to Tucson year-round in 2005 after her husband's death.. Together with her husband, Martha was a frequent traveler, but her pride and joy was her home on Lake George with its magnificent views south along Rogers Slide. She spent countless hours beautifying the grounds, swimming and boating or simply reading in sight of the lake. Her greatest pleasure was to entertain family and guests there and many will fondly remember sipping drinks, good conversation and laughter on the porch at sunset. She was active in the community, as a member of the Eastern Stars and the Hospital Auxiliary, for many years running the Ticonderoga Hospital Gift Shop..
