Marijane Egglefield Obituary

Marijane Dobbs Egglefield, 90, passed away of natural causes on Jan. 15, 2024, at Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. She had been living at the Home of the Good Shepherd Memory Care Residence since April 2021.

Marijane (MJ) was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on Aug. 23, 1933, to Ward John and Norma (Laravie) Dobbs, in a small home on Montcalm Avenue. In 1955, she married Lew "Bud" Egglefield, whom she had first met on a ski slope in Lake Placid. Together they raised four daughters in their Wood Hill home in Elizabethtown. Bud and MJ also had a winter home at Crane Lakes in Port Orange, Fla., where they loved to vacation with their Florida and snowbird friends! Marijane became a grandmother in 1990 and, from that time on, was affectionately known as "Nani" to her eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

For years, Marijane enjoyed a part-time career as a dental hygienist at a private dental practice on River Street in Elizabethtown. At home, she loved to garden, entertain, and write letters, cards, and notes to her family and friends. She made, and usually gifted, homemade pickles and a wonderful marinara sauce using fresh, locally grown vegetables. She attended Mass at St. Elizabeth Church and plays at the Depot Theatre, took classes through the Social Center, gathered with friends at the Fish & Game Club and Cobble Hill Golf Course, and traveled with her husband to Air Force reunions and other social events. She loved her girlfriends and seldom missed their Wednesday night get-togethers.

After retirement, Marijane stayed connected through volunteer work. She made deliveries for Meals on Wheels, answered phones at Elizabethtown Community Hospital, worked at The Thrift Store, and visited friends and shut-ins.

Marijane was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bud, and her only sister, Diane (Dobbs) Merritt. She is survived by her children, Lu Anne Nielsen (Peter), Tracey Mann (Brian), Leslie Brownell (Jeff), and Alison Coleman; grandchildren, Anders (Kayla), Spenser (Sarah), Sam, Schuyler, Katie (Giorgio), Jack, Joseph, and Genevieve; great-granddaughter, Anja Jane; brother-in-law, Richard Merritt; five nieces and one nephew; and several great-nieces and nephews.

In late spring or early summer, a Mass will be held at St. Elizabeth Church in Elizabethtown, N.Y., followed by a Christian burial at Riverside Cemetery. Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry will conduct funeral arrangements. At that time, Marijane will be laid to rest beside her husband, near the flagpole and the big rock marked EGGLEFIELD.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or St. Elizabeth Church in Elizabethtown.
