Larry G. Barcomb Obituary

Chazy, NY - Larry G. Barcomb, 81, of 248 McBride Road, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Larry was born on May 7, 1944, in Moriah, N.Y., son of the late Harold and Alice "Winnie" (Gokey) Barcomb. He graduated from Chazy Central Rural School in 1962, and married Vesta A. Haws on Nov. 30, 1963, at the Schenectady Wesleyan Church with Vesta's foster dad Rev. Donald Klob officiating.

After graduation Larry attended Royal Barber and Beauty School in Schenectady and owned and operated Trim Barber Shop for nine years, before returning to Chazy, and working as a process operator at Wyeth in Rouses Point. He purchased his parent's farm in 1976 and owned and operated Welcome Acres dairy farm along with his wife for over 30 years. Upon retirement, he served on the Champlain Town Council for two years, before being elected Town Supervisor, serving from 2006 until 2021.

Larry was a Free and Accepted Mason, belonging to the Fraternal Lodge since 1971. He was past District Deputy Grand Master serving 1999-2000. He believed very strongly that education was key to transforming lives. He served on the Chazy Central School Board from 1986 through 2001, and as president for four years. Larry was also elected to serve on the Champlain Valley Education Services Board (BOCES) from 1992 through 2021, and as president from 1997 through 2020. He received the Rural Schools Association Appreciation Award for outstanding leadership in 2021.

He enjoyed going for rides in his jeep and on his scooter and taking family and friends out on the river for a pontoon cruise. In his retirement, Larry and Vesta traveled the US and abroad by cruise ship and fulfilled his dream of taking his children and their families on a cruise to Bermuda. He accrued an extensive National Geographic collection and had a keen knowledge of history and the presidents. He had a knack for jigsaw puzzles and enjoyed model trains, and flying R/C airplanes, especially with his grandchildren. He built fond memories taking his grandchildren on several mountain hikes with his encouraging words "I will not be called a quitter" pushing everyone along. The ice cream cone on the ride home was always a great incentive also. Ask any grandchild about his famous question "Can you keep a secret?" It always meant a quiet stop for ice cream was imminent.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Vesta; four children, David (Erin) Barcomb of Northville, N.Y.; Dan Barcomb of Brattleboro, Vt.; Dorinda (Brendon) Hardy of Norwood, N.Y.; and Darren (Michelle Dibernardo) of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Cody, Savannah (Jordan), Heather (Jay), Tara Lee, Tyler (Gwen), Nevin (Diana), and Andrew; his sister Sheila and Leonard Drown of Morrisonville, N.Y.; his brother-in-law Floyd and Peggy Haws of Arkansas; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents Harold and Winnie, Larry is also predeceased by his brother Owen Barcomb and his daughter-in-law Liz Barcomb.
