Kenneth John Scott (John) Obituary

Kenneth John Scott Jr. "Johnny", 75, of Wakefield, R.I., died April 3rd, 2024, in North Providence, R.I., of complications from his battle with dementia that was a result of a traumatic brain injury in 2018.

He was born on July 6th, 1948, to Dorothy Fallon Scott and Kenneth John Scott in Potsdam, N.Y. He was the oldest brother to four siblings, Kathy, Dennis, Christine and Elizabeth.

John was a proud graduate of St John's High School in 1966 where he was a multisport star and band member. He matriculated at Manhattan College in New York City in 1966 through 1968, where he studied Marine Biology. He continued his studies at Plattsburgh State University and graduated cum laude in 1970 with a degree in biological sciences.

John married his high school sweetheart, Susan Zuzga in 1968 and had their only child, Douglas Scott. Upon graduation, John moved his young family to Durham, N.H., to pursue his PhD at the University of New Hampshire. He received his Masters degree in 1972 and earned his PhD in Marine Zoology in 1975.

John moved to Rhode Island to work as a research scientist with the US Environmental Protection Agency's Atlantic Ecology Laboratory in Narragansett, R.I. John spent over twenty years developing protocols regulating the disposal of waste into the ocean, assessing impacts of oil spills on the marine ecosystem, and otherwise contributing to studies of the nation's marine and estuarine environment. After rising through the ranks at EPA, John eventually took a position with Science Applications International Corporation, a long time contractor to the EPA. John managed a team of scientists in the Narragansett and Newport field office for many years before eventually retiring in the early 2000s.

Early in his time in Rhode Island, John met his wife of forty plus years, Judith Preble. John and Judi traveled the world together and eventually purchased a beautiful Caribbean home in Coral Bay on St. John, USVI where they spent warm winters away from the cold Rhode Island weather for more than 30 years. Together they also purchased an Eastern 28' boat and spent their summer months cruising southern New England's coastal waters and even traveled up the Hudson River and into the locks leading to Lake Champlain, to moor off the Scott family home in Cliff Haven in Plattsburgh, N.Y. They loved dogs and enjoyed spoiling a succession of beloved pets.

John lived his life to the fullest every day. He especially loved traveling and spending quality time with family and friends whether in Rhode Island, his longtime family home in Cliff Haven or his St. John home. He loved to entertain - greeting everyone with a giant smile and hug. His ready smile, warmth and laughter was contagious and is greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

John is survived by his wife, Judith Scott, son, Douglas Scott and wife Tracey, grandchildren, Ryan Scott, Taylor Scott and Camryn Scott, sisters, Kathleen McGrath, Christine Lombardi and Elizabeth Scott-Quinn, brother, Dennis Scott, stepson, Patrick Lyons and stepgrandson, Cody Smith.

Additionally he is survived by 13 nieces and nephews and numerous

cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy F. Scott and Kenneth J. Scott.

A Celebration of Life will be held in his hometown of Plattsburgh, N.Y., at the Newman Center on July 21st, 2024, from 1 to 3 p.m. The family welcomes all who cherished John as they did to join them.
