Schuyler Falls, NY - John L. Schmitt, 78, of Schuyler Falls, N.Y., peacefully departed this world and joined his loving wife, Kathleen Schmitt, on May 28, 2025. Born on Feb. 24, 1947, in Huntington, N.Y. John was one of five children born to his loving parents Frank and Elizabeth Schmitt.
John shared his childhood with his brothers Peter, Frank, James and sister, Linda, in a bustling household filled with laughter and camaraderie. His early years shaped him into the generous man known and loved by many. A beloved husband to the late Kathleen Schmitt, father, brother, and friend, John will be fondly remembered for his generous heart and the joy he brought to those around him.
He is survived by his cherished daughter Karen Fox (Joseph) and grandchildren, Joseph, Brandon, and Aubree. He is also survived by his brothers Peter Schmitt (Kathy), Frank Schmitt (Margaret), James Schmitt (Linda), and sister Linda Holliday (Dave), as well as many nieces and nephews.
A proud Army Veteran, John served with distinction in the 101st Airborne during the Vietnam War. John demonstrated courage and dedication in every facet of his life. He carried the values taught to him in his earlier years as well as those he learned in the service into civilian life by immersing himself in various community endeavors. John was a devoted member of the Lions Club and served on the CVPH Foundation Board. He also found joy volunteering at Whiteface Mountain Host Patrol, where he combined his passion for skiing with his love of community service. This was only enhanced by his enthusiasm for welcoming others to his favorite mountain trails during that time.
John's life was truly a testament to the spirit of kindness and giving. He actively donated both resources and his time to several local foundations and food shelves.
John was a man of many talents; he could fix a car in the pitch black while it was up on milk crates and come out without a scratch. His skill and passion for woodworking were unsurpassed. John spent countless hours crafting and sharing his creations as well as donating his time and knowledge to those in need.
John's kind heart, wisdom and sense of humor drew people to him. He was known for his delightful quips, such as, "When you get it all figured out, will you let me know?" and his famous assertion, "Don't you know I'm Superman?" John's words always carried a mix of laughter and comfort for those who knew him.
John's life was celebrated with a viewing at Brown's Funeral Home on May 31, 2025, from 2 to 6 p.m., followed by a service on June 3, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church at 10 a.m. John was laid to rest alongside his dear wife of 54 years, Kathleen, at Pinelawn Memorial Park with military honors.
