Jack Orr of Club Road in Plattsburgh, N.Y., passed away on April 13, 2025, at CVPH Medical Center with his loving family at his side.
He was born on Jan. 23, 1940, to Leeward and Lois Sweet Orr.
Jack attended Mooers Central School, Houghton College, University of Vermont and SUNY Plattsburgh.
He worked for Albany BOCES and was the Northeastern Regional Director for Data Processing working out of Plattsburgh until he retired in 1995.
Jack was the Treasurer for the Mooers Free Library for over 20 years. He was also a Board member for Mooers Senior Housing and the Mooers-Champlain EMS.
Jack had many hobbies and skills. He collected and read many books, mostly history as he was a High School Social Studies teacher in Adams Center early in his career.
When he retired he enjoyed making furniture in his wood shop. He continued to play golf and became interested in astronomy and trains.
He and Joanna moved to Plattsburgh in 2012 and he became interested in other hobbies. He started painting (acrylics) and had a small studio in Plattsburgh. He became interested in fly fishing and spent the winters in his den tying flies. He learned all he could about each hobby and had the books and equipment to prove it.
He married Joanna Valente on May 27, 1988, and she survives him.
Other survivors are the mother of his children, Sharon Kelly and his three children and their families...
Elizabeth Proietti (Tom) of West Hartford, Conn., and their children Olivia Proietti Bacigalupo (Luke) of Falls Church, Va., and Lena Proietti of South Boston, Mass.; James (Tammy) Orr and their sons Brady and Brooks of Auburn, Ala.; Robert (Elvira) Orr and his children Astrid and Adelayde Orr of Palm Coast, Fla., and Nicholas LaValley Orr of Plattsburgh, N.Y.
He is also survived by his sister Judy Roth and his nieces Kathy, Missy and Shellie.
He was predeceased by his parents Leeward and Lois Sweet Orr and his brother-in-law Dan.
He will be buried in Mooers Riverside Cemetery.
His wishes were that there would be no calling hours. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
Memorial donations may be made to the Mooers Free Library, 25 School Street or the Mooers Wesleyan Food Pantry, 149 Maple Street...both in Mooers, NY 12958.
Donations will also be accepted at the Champlain Mooers EMS, 1150 State Route 11, Champlain, NY 12919.
The family would like to thank Dr. Hurwitz and Krrynne and the staff at Northern Nephrology. We would also like to thank Dr. Cleveland and Dr. Pabst and the staff at each office. The staff at the HK Freedman Renal Center became family to us. They treated Jack with kindness and respect and he felt very safe there.
The same was true at Meadowbrook Healthcare in the Subacute Rehab Unit, on 2W/Oakwoods and with his "taxi" drivers Amy and Michael taking him to dialysis and appointments.
Jack will always be remembered by those who knew and loved him as a delightful, kind and gentle man. He was a wonderful husband and father and an even greater grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
