Jean Carol Hough Obituary

Jean Carol Hough, 80, of Pine Tree Drive, Keeseville, passed quietly in her sleep on Nov. 28, 2024, in the comfort of her own home. Beloved mother, sister, mema, and great-mema, aunt and friend, Jean is survived by her children Timothy Fitz-Gerald of Port Orange, Fla., Pamela (Hough) and Steven Rogers of Rotterdam, N.Y., Heather Hough of Rotterdam, N.Y., and Leanne (Hough) and James McPherson of Keeseville, N.Y. She is also survived by her brother Timothy Devins of Wilmington, N.Y., Donna (Devins) and Shirley (Junior) Wallace of Keeseville, N.Y., and Joyce Devins of Keeseville, N.Y., and her grandchildren, (Kiera) Jean, Morgan Grace, and Michael Patrick Rogers of Rotterdam, Shamus Matthew, and Isabella Jean McPherson of Keeseville, Kimberly Marie and Isaac James McPherson of Malone, and great-granddaughter, Rose Marie McPherson, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Jean is preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Ronald Hough, parents Eugene Devins and Mildred (Greenier) Springs, her sisters Patty Devins, Alice (Devins) Rivers, and Linda (Devins) Miller.

Jean was born in Lake Placid Hospital to Eugene and Mildred Devins on Sept. 15, 1944. She grew up in Jay, N.Y. (in the pink house) and attended school at AuSable Forks School. After high school she worked at Paleface Hotel and Dude Ranch, a family owned business of the Fitz-Gerald family. She later became a manager of the food service at Whiteface Mountain. With her husband Ron and several friends, they invested in a restaurant in AuSable Forks, The Red Bandana. Jean then changed careers and found her passion in books, becoming the Assistant Librarian at AuSable Valley High School, and then Librarian at the Keeseville Elementary School before retiring.

Jean was an active member of the community. She was a member of the Ladies of the Elks and also served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Keeseville Elks Lodge. She was also an active member of the Catholic Church and taught religion classes to the youth of Keeseville for many years. Jean was an avid reader when she wasn't up to shenanigans with her friends. She took weekly trips to Linda's Beauty Shop to chat with the girls, and her favorite pastime was going dancing on Thursday nights at the VFW or hitting the Akwesasne Casino with her partner in crime, Ester Neverett. Jean was a generous heart often giving back in 50/50 and other raffles, and donating to several organizations. She would also donate her time to help others whenever needed. She loved watching any and all sports or extracurricular activities that her grandchildren participated in and was the proudest Mema who loved and doted on them whenever she had the chance.
