Jim Thompson, 90, of South Burlington, V.T., formerly of Peru, N.Y., passed away on Feb. 28, 2025. Born on Aug. 24, 1934, in Ausable Forks, N.Y, Jim lived a life of dedication to his family and community.
Jim proudly served in the U.S. Air Force as a radio operator, an experience that was one of the highlights of his life. During his service, he was stationed in Mississippi, Kansas, Alaska, Japan, and Florida; he enjoyed sharing countless stories about his many adventures during this time in his life.
Upon discharge from military duty, Jim completed degrees from SUNY Plattsburgh and Hofstra University on Long Island. He served as a teacher at Peru Elementary School, where he successfully implemented the innovative "Voyage of the Mimi" program. In addition to teaching this program in Peru, Jim traveled to various school districts, providing training and guidance to other educators on how to effectively implement this program in their classrooms.
Jim had a passion for nature and enjoyed long walks in the woods, especially along Palmer Hill, where his grandparents once had a homestead. He was an avid sports fan and a lifelong follower of the Boston Red Sox and NY Giants.
Jim loved music, particularly jazz. It was always playing when he was nearby. Jim had a beautiful singing voice and was a great dancer. He loved a good meal and in his eyes, nothing could beat his wife's cooking.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Kathie Fitts Thompson; his children, Katie Connelly (Tom) of Los Angeles, C.A., and Jim Thompson of South Burlington, V.T. Also his siblings, Bob Thompson (Delores) and their son Tommy; Pat Poissant, and her children Jon, Kelly, and Keri; and Kathy (Danny) Phebus and their daughter Bridget. Also surviving Jim are many loved nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Ann Coughlan Thompson; father, Gerald Thompson; sister, Loretta Thompson Cash and brother, Gerald Thompson.
Jim will be remembered for his dedication to his family whom he cherished above everything. Also, for his many acts of kindness to those in need of help.
Arrangements are with the Stephen C. Gregory and Son Cremation Service in South Burlington, VT. There will be a private memorial service.
