Guy Dowd Banker, 91, of the Peasleeville Road, Peru, died Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh, with his loving wife by his side.

He was born in Peru, Oct. 23, 1932, the son of Lawrence Sr. and Olive (Dowd) Banker.

Guy grew up in Peru and graduated from Peru High School in 1951.

He joined the United States Army in 1952 and served his country proudly until his honorable discharge in 1954. Guy received two Bronze Stars for heroically protecting his unit during the Korean War.

He married the former Peggy Ann Wells of Standish on Jan. 8, 1955, at Saint Michaels Church.

Guy was a corrections officer for 26 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, earning the degree of Grand Knight. He was also a member of the VFW Post 309, serving as a Post JR. Vice Commander from 1986 until 1987.

Guy enjoyed woodworking in his shop, fishing, hunting, and in later years golf, and on Tuesdays you would find them in Saranac dancing, singing, and playing spoons and the harmonica.

Guy was known for his caring of people and the community by actively aiding any one in need.

Left to cherish the memory of Guy are his wife of 69 years, Peggy Banker; their three children and their spouses, Deborah (Robert) Garand, Peggy (Erik) Eaglefeather and Gene Banker; and sister, Harriet Drollette.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant son, Guy Banker Jr.; sister, Sally Chevalier; brother, Lawrence Banker Jr.; and brother-in-law, Leo Drollette.

At Guy's request there will be no public calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine's Church in Peru with Rev. Sony Pulickal, celebrating. Full military honors will follow outside of church.
