Geoffrey M. Spear, 63, of Peru, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2025.


Geoffrey was born in Albany, N.Y. on Nov. 17, 1961, the son of Dr. Merritt Fuller Spear and Joan (Fraughton) Spear.


Geoffrey graduated from Peru High School in 1980. He attended SUNY Plattsburgh and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry. He went on to receive a Master's in Education from Springfield College. He continued his education at the University of Connecticut where he began his professional career as a coach for the men's soccer team. Geoffrey continued his career at Paul Smith's College as a head coach for two years. He then began his coaching career of 29 years at SUNY Plattsburgh, where he was the assistant and goalie coach for the men's soccer team. He furthered his commitment to the Plattsburgh soccer programs by helping the women's team as a goalie coach.


In 1986, Geoffrey met the love of his life, Dr. Anne-Marie (Boulé) Spear, in Plattsburgh. They were married in June 1991 and had 33 wonderful years of marriage. Geoff and Anne welcomed four children into their lives.


Geoffrey was involved in coaching at Clinton County College, Peru High School, the Peru Youth Commission for over 20 years, many youth soccer camps in the area, and as one of the founders of the Plattsburgh Football Club (PFC). He was involved in the Peru Community Church youth group, Apple Valley Board, and the Clinton County Republican Party. He also gave his time as a monitor for Peru Elementary School and was affectionately known by his beloved students as "Mr.Geoff".


Geoffrey was predeceased by his mother, Joan Spear. He is survived by his wife, Anne-Marie, and their four children and their families: Taylor Spear and his wife Katie, Ian Spear and his wife Sara, and their son Blake, Samantha Spear and her partner JD Side, and Tanner Spear. He is also survived by his father, Merritt Spear, three sisters and their families: Dr. Alison Spear and her wife Erica (Hypnarowski) of Troy, N.Y. and their two sons Brady and Keaton; Stephanie Spear of Peru, N.Y.; and Jennifer (Spear) Tompkins and her husband Steven Tompkins of Gansevoort, N.Y. and their three sons, Max (Lauren), Jordan, and Luke (Iulia).


Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on January 31st at Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on February 1st at St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh. Internment will take place in the parish cemetery in the Spring.
