Gary L. Howard
Gary L. Howard, 81, passed away on Sept. 28, 2019, at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., with his loving family by his side.
Gary was born on Feb. 12, 1938, in Keeseville, the son of Robert and Mary (Murphy) Howard. Gary graduated from Keeseville High School in 1956 and entered the United States Marine Corp. in June of 1956 as a Corporal and was honorably discharged in April, 1958. During his enlistment he was a Radio Messenger and Decoder. Gary was very proud to have served his country and will always be remembered for his unconditional belief "Once a Marine, Always a Marine - Semper Fi."
Gary was an honorary member of the Peru Fire Department for 9 years and was known as "Tanker 2." He was also a life member of Elk's Lodge 2072 in Keeseville, American Legion Post 504 in AuSable Forks, Fraternal Order of Eagles in Port Orange, Fla., and the Moose Lodge in Plattsburgh/Daytona Beach.
After his discharge from the military in 1958, he began his career with NYSDOCS as a Correction Officer and eventually retired from Clinton Correctional Facility in August, 1984.
Gary met the love of his life, Josephine A. Brelia, whom he married on April 28, 1962, and they spent 57 wonderful years together.
Gary was a snow bird and enjoyed spending the winter months in Port Orange, Fla., with his loving wife for the past 24 years. He enjoyed cruising around Daytona Beach in his many convertibles with his wife as his co-pilot. In the summer months he enjoyed spending time at Iroquois Campground with his family and friends, sharing stories of his "Marine days" and fond memories of his childhood days with his Mom and Dad and his grandparents. He could often be seen driving his golf cart through the campground decorated with his beloved Boston Red Sox and was harassed by the NY Yankees fans in the park. He was fortunate to have spent time with two (2) of his grandsons, Daniel "Danny Boy" and Nickolas "Bear," whom he fondly spoke about their successes in life.
Gary was predeceased by his oldest daughter, Tracey J. Howard, his parents, Robert and Mary Howard, his brother, William Howard, and sister-in-law, Kathy (Hanlon) Howard.
Gary is survived by the love of his life, Jo, his daughter, Mary Jo Howard-Cassidy "Georgi," his five (5) grandsons, Daniel Cassidy and his wife, Lindsay of Hagerstown, Md., Nickolas Cassidy of Boston, Mass., Randall LaBombard of Plattsburgh, Brian LaBombard of Tupper Lake, and Robert LaBombard of Plattsburgh, a sister, Beth (Howard) DeFayette of Mexico, a sister-in-law, Lucille Parsons of Peru, a brother-in-law, Peter H. Brelia and wife, JoAnne Brelia of Greensboro, Md., and many nieces and nephews.
