Bernadette M. Mullen entered heaven on June 29, 2024, after a long battle with dementia; she was 79 years old. At the time of her death, she resided in Temple, Texas.
Bernadette, the fourth of seven children born to Henri and Jeanne (Chebaut) Mullier, in Laon, France, on Jan. 16, 1945. She was born full of laughter with a side of sassiness. She spoke fondly of growing up in France and of her family.
Bernadette met Sherman Pelkey, an airman, in France and they married on Dec. 29, 1962. They were stationed in Florida when their first-born son, Stephan, was born in 1963. Eventually, Sherman would leave the USAF and they moved back to the Adirondack region of New York and welcomed a daughter, Brigitte in 1965. They purchased a house outside of Elizabethtown, N.Y., and in 1969, their third child, a son, Shawn was born. While married to Sherman, they bowled in local leagues. Bernadette was a natural bowler and together, they won many trophies. As a family, they enjoyed camping and hanging with friends. The pair would eventually divorce.
Bernadette married her second husband, Thomas "Tom" Mullen on April 10, 1982. They welcomed a son, Thomas, in 1982. Bernadette and Tom enjoyed car races, drives in the country, and vacations in Maine. They remained married until Tom's death in 2018.
Bernadette worked for Essex County Horace Nye Home for 30 years and retired. As to not become bored with retirement, she joined Mountain Lakes Services as a job coach for 15 years. She so enjoyed helping people, making them laugh and ensuring that they were receiving great care. One of her clients volunteered at the Essex County animal shelter in Westport, where she would meet and adopt her beloved German Shepard, Jack.
Bernadette is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brothers-Jacques, Michel, and Rene, and her sisters-Jacqueline, Claudine and son-in-law, Bret. She is survived by her children, Steve (Lisa) of Port Henry, N.Y.; Brigitte of Troy, Texas; Shawn (Michelle) of Cadyville, N.Y.; and Thomas of Ellenburg, N.Y. Grandchildren: Lauren (Billy) and great-grandson, William aka Liam, Caitlyn (Casey) and great-grandson, Brady, Matthew, Joe, Ryan (Landon) and great-grandson, Levi and Zachary (Jenny) and great-grandson, Asher, Jacob, Aliyah, and Nevaeh, her sister, Micheline and many nieces and nephews.
