Willis H. "Bill" Lawrence, 76, of the Military Turnpike, Plattsburgh, died unexpectedly, Saturday, July 15, 2017, at his home after a brief battle with cancer.
He was born in Plattsburgh, Dec. 24, 1940, the son of Melvin E. and Dorothea Mae (Bromley) Lawrence. Bill grew up in Peru and graduated from Peru Central School in 1959. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served proudly until his honorable discharge.
He and his wife have owned and operated Bill's Body Shop in Plattsburgh for 54 years.
Bill was a member of The Peru Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 309, The Keeseville Elks Club, and The Black Mountain Hunting Club. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed boating, spending time at the family camp in Willsboro Bay and working at "The Farm," also in Willsboro.
Left to cherish the memory of Bill are, his wife and best friend of 56 years, Faye Lawrence; three children and their spouses, Dana (Cheryl) Lawrence, Dena (Thomas) Tedford, and Darcy (Jeremy) Way; grandchildren, Daniel, Maria, Lindsey, Jonathon, Megan, John, Adam, Emily, Tyler, Kennedy, Lincoln, and Sullivan; great-grandchildren, William, Jackson, and Sawyer; brother, Alan Lawrence; sister, Martha Wildman; mother-in-law, Rita Stangrover; and brother-in-law, Gary Thornhill (Carol Denton).
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by father-in-law George Stangrover; son-in-law John Brosseau Jr.; and a special uncle, Phil Lawrence.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19, at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. in the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel. Military honors will be accorded at the Hamilton Veterans Memorial, Wednesday evening.
