Walter L. Wood, 72, of Military Turnpike, Plattsburgh, passed away on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017 at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.
He was born on Feb. 4, 1945 in Riverview, N.Y., the son of Walter and Mabel (Charland) Wood.
Walter was a decorated US Army Veteran, serving 21 years and 9 months, retiring as a Master Sergeant. While in the military he received the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and Bars, and Rifle Sharpshooter Badge.
Walter was a life member of the VFW #125 in Plattsburgh and a communicate of St. Alexander's Church in Morrisonville.
Survivors include three sons, Walter and Pamela Wood of Mt. Holly, N.J., Ken Wood of Fredericksburg, Va., Timothy and Heidi Wood of Everett, Pa.; five grandchildren, Michael Summers, Meagan Wood, Morgan Wood, Addison Wood, Alexander Wood; three great-grandchildren; special nieces, Wendy Plympton, Amanda Plympton, Jessica Plympton; and several other nieces and nephews.
Walter was predeceased by his parents; and eight siblings, Joseph, Robert, Alfred, Theresa, Barbara, Rita, Margaret and Marie.
Family will greet friends from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at St. Alexander's Church in Morrisonville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., by Rev. Scott Seymour, Pastor. Walter's interment will take place at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
