Suzanne's Story

Text size

Suzanne D. Carey, 63, of Plattsburgh, passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the Tampa General Hospital, with her family by her side. She was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y. on Feb. 14, 1954, the daughter of Francis and Henrietta (Fortin) DeFayette. She was a loyal daughter, a caring sister, a loving mother, and a faithful wife. She distinguished herself by what she did for others, and will be remembered for her love of books, crochet, and most recently her interest in quilting. She actively pursued her love of travel, and enjoyed exploring the United States by car, as well as flying to exotic places like China.
A committed educator, Mrs. Carey earned her undergraduate degree in early childhood education in 1976, obtaining a Masters degree at Plattsburgh State University in 1981. Teaching was her vocation and her career spanned more than three decades. Countless young students grew up to be better citizens, because they spent time in Mrs. Carey's classroom. She retired in 2010, having taught at Peru Central School, and at the time of her passing, she was a volunteer teacher at Bailey Avenue Elementary.
Sue DeFayette and John Carey married Sept. 10, 1976. They raised a family together for 40 years.
She is survived by her devoted husband; and three sons, Kevin (wife, Tara), Bryce (wife, Dorothy) and Brendan (wife, Cristi); four siblings, John, Tom, Judy, and Gizelle; she is also survived by many nieces and nephews, all whom admired her.
