Shirley I. Richter, 92, of Christian Road in Essex, died Thursday, June 29, 2017, at the UVM Elizabethtown Community Hospital.
She was born Nov. 7, 1924, in Essex, the daughter of Gordon and Mae (Marshall) Perry, and was a graduate of Essex High School and what is now SUNY Plattsburgh.
She and her late husband, Ken Richter, traveled the world. They made documentary films in 84 countries. They showed these films and lectured on the contents in the U.S. and Canada. Their goal was to tell about the country through "family" stories - an English ballet dancer; a nomadic Berber Tribe in Morocco; a high-country sheep station family in New Zealand, and show the country's natural and man-made beauty. Their mission was to improve understanding among all the peoples of our shared world.
Survivors include her sister, Linda Perry (Edwin) Young; sister-in-law, Jane Demar Perry; two nephews, Bob Perry, and Marshall (Karen) Crowningshield; three nieces, Deborah (Jack) Daly, Laura (Scott) Bridge, Joan Young (Jeff) Foil; six great-nephews; and one great-great-niece.
In addition to her husband, Ken and her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William C. "Bill" Perry; and sister, Polly Ann Crowningshield.
Honoring her wishes, all services are private. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Dedham, Mass.
