Sally Ann Sheldrake of 254 Sheldrake Road in Au Sable Forks, N.Y. went peacefully to her Heavenly Mansion on March 7, 2017 after an operation on her hip at the hospital in Plattsburgh.
The last several years, she had many physical problems and suffered from dementia. As a result, she had to be placed at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh, N.Y., where she resided for the last 3 1/2 years.
Sally was born on March 29, 1940 in Berlin, N.H., the daughter of Ted and Bea Joy. Her dad moved there to find work. Later, they had to move back to Au Sable Forks to care for her dad's mother.
She attended a one-room schoolhouse on Green Street and, in 1949, transferred to the Au Sable Forks public school where she graduated in 1957. After graduation, she worked as a telephone operator in Au Sable Forks for 28 years, becoming the chief operator for most of
those years. Later, she worked a short time for Cornell Cooperative Extension in Westport, N.Y. as well as at Plattsburgh State University as a secretary. Eventually she ended up working for
two lawyers in Au Sable Forks.
Sally was married in the local Methodist Church where she worshiped and was the director of the children's choir. She was also involved in other church activities. She loved horses and rode her faithful horse, Sally. She enjoyed horseback riding, tennis, and swimming as well as singing in choirs and at family gatherings. She and her husband, John, raised beef cattle and horses and were involved with 4-H activities as well as different churches in the area. The most
favorite times of her life were spent with her children and grandchildren doing various activities. From camping to teaching them to swim, read, and play the piano to her famous "talks" to investing in their Christian education, Sally spent her life giving and leaving a Godly legacy to her family. She was an AWESOME mother, grandmother, and friend. She always had practical advice and a compassionate spirit. We will miss her!
She married John Sheldrake on Dec. 29, 1960, and enjoyed 56 wonderful years together while raiSing four children.
She is survived by her husband, John; and four children, Theodore
Sheldrake of Vergennes, Vt., Lori and her husband Peter Ducharme of Au Sable Forks, N.Y., Julie and her husband Dean Gilbert of Peru, N.Y., and Bradley and his wife Amy of Peru, N.Y. She had seven grandchildren, Caleb, Mila, Lydia and Zebulun Ducharme, Jonathan and David Gilbert, and Emma Sheldrake. She is also survived by her two brothers, Bruce Joy and his wife Marj, and Tim Joy and his wife Karen; along with many precious nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Ted and Bea Joy; and her brother, Teddy.
There will be no calling hours or funeral. On May 13, 2017 at 1:00 p.m., there will be a Memorial Service and celebration of her life at the United Methodist Church in Au Sable Forks, NY. Burial will follow at the North Jay Cemetery on Stickney Bridge Road in Au Sable Forks, N.Y.
