Rita's Story

Rita A. Garrand, 87, of Depot Street, Mooers, passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at the UVM Health Network, CVPH, Plattsburgh, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in AuSable Forks, N.Y., on Aug. 21, 1929, the daughter of the late George and Esther (Votraw) Pelkey.
Rita graduated from Ausable Forks High School in June 1947. Following high school, she worked as a housekeeper from 1948 to 1952. Rita entered Loretta Business School in September 1952 at Plattsburgh, N.Y., which she graduated from in June, 1953. She was employed as a secretary at the Huntington Insurance Agency in Ausable Forks, N.Y., and remained there until 1956. On May 26 of that year, she married Warren James Garrand at the Holy Name Church in Ausable Forks, N.Y. She and Warren were married for 52 years.
Rita is survived by her children, Brian (and Margaret) of Mooers, Kevin (and Doris) of Moline, Ill., Scott (and Carol) of Frederick, Md., and Mark and partner Marco Cabillan of Plattsburgh; former daughter-in-law, Doris Garrand of Plattsburgh; grandchildren, Benjamin (and Lisa) Garrand and Jason (and Liz) Garrand, both of Plattsburgh; and great-grandchildren, Layla, Peyton, Hunter, Hayden, and Hudson Garrand. Rita is also survived by her sister-in-law, Fay Pelkey of Swarthmore, Pa., and several nieces and nephews.
Rita was predeceased by her loving husband, Warren, on Nov. 18, 2008, and all of her siblings, Chester, Patricia, and twin sister, Anita.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 13, at St. Joseph's Church in Mooers, with the Rev. Adrian Gallagher, celebrating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in the spring.
