Marie's Story

Text size

On Sunday, March 19, 2017, Marie "Elaine" Amato, 75, of Jay, lost her long battle with cancer. Elaine was born in Queens, N.Y., on May 11, 1941, to Michael and Virginia (DiGilio) Annunziato. She was the oldest of three daughters and is predeceased by her parents and her sister, Carmen (Annunziato) Pirraglia. Her sister, Virginia (Annunziato) Castellano, currently resides in Virginia with her husband.
Elaine married her high school sweetheart, Anthony Amato in 1963. They have two children (Louise and Robert) and remained in their home town until moving to the Adirondacks in 1982.
Before moving to the Adirondacks, Elaine worked as a secretary at Deer Park High School, owned a popular luncheonette with her husband Anthony in Deer Park, N.Y., and worked for several years at Estee Lauder.
Elaine was the Executive Administrative Assistant at Mountain Lake Academy in Lake Placid for 30 years. She loved her work and was considered the "Mountain Lake Mom" by the staff. Elaine cared for her co-workers and the residents of the school. She was always ready to lend a hand, or provide a listening ear for anyone who needed it.
She was an outgoing person who loved to spend time with her family and friends, who loved to shop and go out for dinner with her husband. She was a member of the Italian American Club and enjoyed their get-togethers and monthly dinners. Elaine was always quick with a smile and encouraging words.
Elaine was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Anthony, her daughter Louise and her fiancee Michael Bowen, her son Robert, his wife Michelle (Premuto) Amato, her seven grandchildren, Tiffany (Kinsman) Blaney, Toni Kinsman, Elena, Emily, Marco, Robert, and Rocco Amato, as well as her two great-granddaughters, Leah and Milo Blaney. She is also survived by her sister Virginia and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, at the Thwaits-Zaumetzer Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be at noon at the Holy Name Church in AuSable Forks. The family would appreciate if in lieu of flowers, people would consider making a donation to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Online condolence and to light a candle will be offered at tzfunerals.com
