Jerry J. Wood, 64, of Crescent Drive, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at the Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vt., surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Ticonderoga, N.Y., on June 18, 1952, the son of Joseph P. and Velma R. (Roberts) Wood.
Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1972. He was first stationed in San Francisco, Calif., where he served in the Military Police and Honors Detail of which he assisted in performing honors to many high-ranking officials who had passed. He later was stationed in Italy, where along with his duties in the U.S. Army, he played semi-pro basketball.
In 1977, Jerry became a corrections officer with the NYS Department of Corrections where he retired from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora after more than 34 years of service. In his earlier years, Jerry enjoyed working on classic cars and more recently, enjoyed taking trips in his convertible. He loved to go trout fishing, travel, and relax on the deck on hot summer days. He never went a day without his coffee and spending at least two hours on crossword puzzles. Above all else, was his love for family. He cherished every moment spent with them and will be greatly missed.
Throughout Jerry's 16-year journey in recovery, he was always eager to extend a welcoming hand to a newcomer, and helped countless individuals.
Survivors include his companion of over 16 years, Janet Kinne of Plattsburgh; two sons, Adam Wood and his wife April of Morrisonville, and Garrett Wood of Plattsburgh, along with their mother, Gail Vibert of Plattsburgh. He also leaves behind two stepdaughters, Morgan Chase and her husband Eric of Clarence Center, N.Y., and Lara Kinne of Plattsburgh; four siblings, Cheryl Pryor of Largo, Fla., Tracie Hutti and her husband Roger of Peru, Todd Wood and his wife Pam of Redford, and Boyd Wood and his fiancee Colleen Bennett of Dannemora; three grandchildren, Seth Holder, Rowan Wood, and Parker Chase; along with several nieces and nephews.
Jerry was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Constance Waldron and Terry Wood.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Church of the Assumption in Redford.
Burial will take place at a later date in Assumption Cemetery in Redford.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Adirondack Wildlife Conservation Society or the FitzPatrick Cancer Center.
