Former City of Plattsburgh Fire Chief James "Jim" H. Squires, 72, of Conifer Circle, Plattsburgh, N.Y., passed away Friday, March 3,
2017, at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vt., with his loving wife by his side. He was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on Dec. 24, 1944, the son of Herman and Marian (Rollier) Squires.
Jim attended St. Peter's School and continued on to Beekmantown Central School where he was a member of the first graduating Class of 1963. He attended Clinton Community College and Empire State College where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business, Management and Economics with a concentration of Fire Service Administration. Jim worked full time at Grand Union until he began his career with the City of Plattsburgh Fire Department in 1969. He rose through the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Fire Chief and became Chief in 1992, a position he held until his retirement in 2007. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves. In addition to spending time with family and friends, Jim enjoyed fishing, spending time with his dog, Izzy, feeding the birds, traveling, playing slot machines, drawing, working at his apartment house, driving his 1966 Volkswagen Beetle and listening to his favorite band the Eagles.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, Herman and Marion Squires. He is survived by his wife, Heidy (Reid) Squires of Plattsburgh, married Sept. 29, 2007; a son, Shane Squires and his wife Maureen and their children, Cassandra, Logan and Mia, all of Clifton Park, N.Y., a stepson, Nolan Rabideau of Plattsburgh; two sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Botten and her husband Charles of Plattsburgh, Margaret "Meg" Duquette and her husband Clark of Plattsburgh; his father and mother-in-law, Dale and Rebecca Reid of Peru; his brother and sister-in-law, Girard and Jody Dumas; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh, N.Y.
A funeral service will follow at 5 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home.
Interment will be later in the year at St. Peter's Cemetery.
