Howard's Story

Text size

Howard J. Mero, 84, of Gilliland Lane, Willsboro, died Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at the Champlain Valley Senior Community in Willsboro. He was born in Willsboro, July 25, 1932, the son of Arthur and Edna (Christian) Mero.
Howard served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1954.
Howard was a logger, worked at the missile site, was a stone and brick mason for Art Jacques, was a master carpenter and lastly handled the maintenance in the former Willsboro School.
Howard suffered with Alzheimer's Disease for many years. As his care required more than his wife could handle, he began living in the former Willsboro School, currently the Champlain Valley Senior Community. This was a blessing in disguise because Howard felt very comfortable in this building that he had previously cared for, for many years. Though it wasn't home, it felt like home to him because it was so familiar from years ago.
Howard was a member of the Willsboro Volunteer Fire Dept. and a former member of the Keeseville Elk's Lodge. He enjoyed wood working in his shop and gardening.
Left to cherish the memory of Howard are, his loving wife of 63 years, Mae Mero, whom he married Oct. 18, 1954 in the St. Philip of Jesus Church in Willsboro; three sons, Rick J. of Willsboro, Michael A. of Ballston Spa, and Thomas C. of Willsboro; two grandchildren, Rebecca Jones and Zachary Mero; three great-grandchildren, Stella and Lillian Jones and Jaden Mero; and one sister, Melvina Toomey of Keeseville.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by five siblings, Rita Johnpier, and Donald, Richard, Leon, and Leo Mero.
Relatives and friends may call from Noon to 1 pm Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A prayer service will follow at 1 pm in the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Champlain Valley Senior Community.
Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru, 643-9055.
