It is with great sadness that the family of Gary Murphy announces his passing after a year-long battle with cancer, on Saturday, June 10, 2017, at the age of 67.
Born in Utica, N.Y., Gary attended Notre Dame High School, in New York Mills, N.Y. He went on to earn his BA in Philosophy from Utica College; his Masters in Social Work (MSW) from Syracuse University; and was a certified LCSW. A college work study position at the Neighborhood Center in Utica, N.Y., under the tutelage of its director Marie Russo, inspired Gary's life-long social work career. He focused his efforts in areas of community work, mental health, developmental disabilities, elder and palliative care. Gary dedicated his career to caring for people in distress. His 40-year career included work in both New York and Vermont, working for organizations such as the Neighborhood Center in Utica, N.Y.; Hospice of the North Country, Plattsburgh, N.Y.; Howard Center, Burlington, Vt.; and Sunmount (OPWDD), Tupper Lake and Plattsburgh, N.Y.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 46 years, Roseanne Winslow Murphy; his daughters, Cristin W. Murphy (James Reed) and Margaret A. Gary is predeceased by his father and mother, Leslie F. Murphy Jr. and Ann (Schram) Murphy; brother, Patrick; and sisters-in-law, Thea (Bean) Murphy and Rebecca Winslow; parents-in-law, Frank and Rita Winslow.
Gary valued family over all. So many friends became part of his family network, many since schooldays. He saw people as they were, always finding something worthwhile and offering his friendship and support.
