Dyer N. Blanchard, 88, a resident of South Glens Falls passed away on March 18, 2017 at his longtime home surrounded by his loving family and cat Sweetie.
Born on Sept. 3, 1928 in Willsboro, N.Y., he was the son of the late Howard Blanchard and Hazel Stafford-Blanchard. Dyer was raised in Willsboro, N.Y. and was a graduate of Willsboro High School.
Dyer was a man of extraordinary talent, a union millwright of local 229 for more than thirty years, and was employed at the New York & Penn Paper Mill in Willsboro. He relocated to the Glens Falls area to raise his young family and spent the remainder of his long career with Imperial which later became Hercules Chemical and finally Ciba-Geigy. Known by his family as Pa, Papa, or Bampi, Dyer could fix, or tell you how to fix anything.
Dyer was a long-time member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in South Glens Falls, a member of the Robert A. Nugent Knights of Columbus Council 11160, and a tireless volunteer who with his wife, family, and many friends brought the community together through organizing the St. Michael's church Bingo for more than thirty years.
Dyer was an avid outdoorsman spending countless days at his family camp in the Adirondacks enjoying the peace and tranquility, taking pictures, and hunting when the mood struck him. Dyer enjoyed traveling, especially cross country to visit his daughter Debbie, her husband Tim, and their family in Nebraska.
Dyer was predeceased by his loving wife of sixty-two years Virginia in 2010. Of his parents five children, Dyer is predeceased by his brother's Spencer, and Walter, and survived by his beloved sister Ehelwyne "Tootie" Patnode, and husband Carl of Rhode Island; and his brother Dick, and wife Madeline Blanchard of Willsboro, N.Y.
A doting, and very patient father of three daughters Dyer's smile could often be attributed to the antics of any of his girls.
Dyer is survived by his eldest daughter Bonnie Elms and husband Dick of Fort Ann, N.Y. and their three children, Dyer Elms; Becky Davidson and husband John of Donovan, Ill.; and Bill Elms and wife Cheryl of Augusta, Ga. His middle daughter Debra Trent and husband Tim of Bellevue, Neb. and their three children, Jason Trent and wife Ruby of Virginia Beach; Virginia; Jennifer Eveland and husband Greg of La Vista, Neb.; and Erik Trent of Omaha, Neb. His youngest daughter, Angie Howard and husband Steve of South Glens Falls, N.Y. and their two boys, Michael Howard and wife Meghan of South Glens Falls, N.Y., and John Howard of Hampton, Georgia.
A proud and loving man Dyer was the biggest fan of his many great, and great-great-grandchildren including Brittany Callahan, Kabrina Davidson, Krystal Davidson, Angela Howard, Seth "Peg Leg" Weinberger, Cody Elms, Karley Davidson, Katie Elms, Kamerin Davidson, Jaina Eveland, Jackson Eveland, Macen Howard, Tori Eveland, Alayna Trent, Summer Eveland, Lucy Howard, Ashley Trent and Gavin Batchelor.
Humility and faith being two of his strongest traits Dyer touched many hearts in his years on this earth and will be missed dearly by many more extended family members and friends.
Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the Regan & Denny Funeral Home, 94 Saratoga Road, South Glens Falls, N.Y. followed by a brief memorial service officiated by long-time friend Sister Donna with bereavement in the parish hall of St. Michael's Church on Saratoga Road in South Glens Falls, N.Y immediately to follow.
The family would like to thank the staff of Community Hospice of Saratoga Country, and Dyer's caregiver in his final days Lynn Oddy for their kind, and compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations in Dyer's memory be made to the Community Hospice of Saratoga County, New York.
