Thomas J. Cronin

September 15, 1934 - October 04, 2018

Thomas J. Cronin, 84, of Prospect Street, Plattsburgh, N.Y., passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, at his home. Born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on Sept. 15, 1934, he was the first son of Linda (Ashton) Cronin and George Cronin.
Tom graduated from St. John's High School in Plattsburgh, N.Y., excelled equally in football, basketball, baseball and academics. He graduated with a degree in Elementary Education from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and received a Master's degree in Administration from Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.
As a young man, Tom served in the U.S. Navy. He then spent twenty years teaching elementary school on Long Island. He returned to Plattsburgh, working in real estate and becoming an assistant to state Senator Ron Stafford, making appearances and speaking on his behalf. He was a member of the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus and the Plattsburgh Duplicate Bridge Club. Although he vowed never to play again, he rediscovered his love for the game of Bridge and traveled the North Country playing in tournaments and becoming a master level bridge player, five points short of achieving the rank of Silver Life Master.
It is from Camp Kettle where many have their fondest memories of Tom. At camp, a home away from home was created, where everyone was welcome and everyone was treated like family. Tom C. was an integral part of that. He and his fellow members built a special place in the woods. His spirit, and our memories of him, will forever ensure camp continues to build on that legacy.
Tom is survived by his longtime beloved companion Lorraine Streeter; his daughter, Jocelyn Cronin and her husband Nick Molander; three sons, Patrick Cronin, Kyle Cronin and his partner Barbara Green, Corey Cronin and his wife Lisa Cronin; stepson, Gregg Sayers and his wife Erica; stepdaughters, Stacie Carilli and her husband Frank, Beth Lomb and her husband Bill; two brothers, Peter Cronin and his wife Barbara Cronin, Richard Cronin and his wife Sandy Cronin; and three grandchildren, Hunter, Kendra and Jack.
He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth Jo Cronin.
Tom will be remembered for his sense of humor, generous spirit and dedication to his community. He was loved by many, a testament to a life well lived.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Church in Plattsburgh; burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Donations in Tom's memory may be made to Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation, P.O. Box 195, Ray Brook, NY 12977.
Arrangements are entrusted to Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad Street, Plattsburgh, NY 12901, (518)-561-3980. Online condolences and memorial candles may be offered at

Not only do I remember Mr. Cronin as a teacher when I attended Santapogue as a student in the 60’s but also when I was a substitute teacher in the early 80’s. He was kind to me both times. So sorry for your loss. He was one from the greatest generation.

For twenty years we saw each other every day. It was wonderful. I wish it had been thirty. You were an extra fine educator, introducing children to the wonders of the outdoors. I recently saw Dominic Panetta and he asked about you and then said, " Mr. Cronin was the best teacher I ever had". That says it all. June and I were blessed to have been your friend

Our sympathies to all of Tom's family. The memories of my childhood revolve around the close friends my parents had, and Tom was a big part of that. From the handmade Christmas stockings his mom Linda provided us, to growing up with Joce, Pat, Kyle, and Corey at Camp Kettle, to being able to tell our son "yes, I've been to Fire Island" when he could not imagine such a thing, to Marty, BJ, and meeting the warmth of Lorraine, memories of Tom C. are a treasured part of the fabric of my life.
Thinking of you, Cathy

Our deepest and most sincere condolences to the Cronin family and Loraine. Both Elaine and I will miss Tom. We became friends and neighbors 17 years ago. Tom was,and always will be loved for the kindness, laughs and comfort of being one of our best friends. Rest in peace Tom. Your memory and kindness will be with us forever

Tom and i were schoolmates at St. John's in the late forties and early fifties. He, Norm Votraw and I hung around together for a while and had some fun times. Sorry to hear of his passing.

To the Cronin family and my fellow classmate, Dick. Sending heartfelt sympathy and uplifting the family in prayer. I remember Tom at SJA and his being an excellent basketball player. Rest in Peace, Tom.
