Ruth Gagnier Whalen passed away on April 12 at Meadowbrook Healthcare, Plattsburgh, N.Y. Born in 1924 in Churubusco, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late John A. Gagnier and Dora Patnode Gagnier. Ruth graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Malone and from Culver Academy in Syracuse. She was the owner of Ruth's Beauty Shop in Churubusco, which she ran for many years. A devout Catholic, Ruth also directed the choir at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, and gave private piano lessons. She was a 4H leader and substitute mail carrier.
In 1969, she married Herman Whalen. They traveled extensively and lived in Boynton Beach, Fla., Chateaugay Lake and Plattsburgh. Together they wrote and published A History of Chateaugay Lake.
She is survived by her sister Jeanne (Robert) Stone and sister-in-law Kay Gagnier.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents and husband as well as siblings and in-laws, Marie and Harold "Tap" Damour, Doris and Art Premo, Francis "Sparky" and Mary Gagnier, Gerald "Jerry" Gagnier, and Vivian "Vin" Gledhill.
She was a beloved "Aunt Ruthie" to 35 nieces and nephews, who with their spouses, children and grandchildren, will always cherish the memory of her attention and affection.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 17 at 11 a.m. in St. Edmund's Church, Ellenburg.
Burial will take place in the spring at Immaculate Heart Cemetery, Churubusco.
