Robert Malcolm Sutherland
December 01, 1933 - September 21, 2018
He was born in Plattsburgh on Dec. 1, 1933, son of Robert M. and Lydia (Montville) Sutherland.
Robert attended Saranac Central High School and graduated from St. Lawrence University. Following graduation he attended Columbia University, where he received his Engineering Degree.
He then moved to West Virginia where he worked as an engineer on the pipelines and then shortly after, moved to Connecticut. During the 1970s, Robert returned to Plattsburgh where he began his own Engineering Firm, R.M. Sutherland, P.C. He worked as a Civil Engineer serving the North Country for over 35 years.
Robert married the former Joan M. Holland on July 28, 1956, at St. Alexander's Church in Morrisonville. Joan predeceased him on Jan. 4, 2009.
Robert's true passion in life was fishing. For over 50 years, he enjoyed traveling to various parts of the world to spend time freshwater and saltwater fishing. Family vacations were always planned around on what fish were "running" and where.
He was a member of Lake Champlain Trout Unlimited, the Key Colony Beach Fishing and Boating Club in the Florida Keys, The Barracks Golf Club, and a former member of the Valcour Sailing Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Cara Sutherland of Center Sandwich, N.H., and Darcy Sutherland and her husband Melvin Irwin of Peru.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.
Burial will take place on Wednesday, September 26th, at 11 a.m. in the West Plattsburgh Union Cemetery in Morrisonville.
