Robert's Story

Robert Elliott Shimko, 71, of Sandra Avenue, passed away Friday, July 28, 2017, at the Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
He was born in New Brighton, Pa., on Dec. 26, 1945, the son of John and Anna (Mackanin) Shimko.
Bob enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after he graduated from high school, and was a Vietnam Veteran.
After he moved to Plattsburgh in 1971, he earned his undergraduate degree in accounting at SUNY Plattsburgh and his MBA at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He worked as the Finance Director at Municipal Lighting Department until his retirement in 2008.
Bob spent many years as a board member of the Plattsburgh City School District and several terms as a Clinton County Legislator.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie (Bennett) Shimko; one son Robert Bennett Shimko and his wife, Lisa Wartenberg, of Houston Texas; one daughter, Sarah Wright Shimko and her wife, Heather Dzick, of Waunakee, Wis.; two brothers, John of San Francisco, Calif., and Rick and his wife Sally of Beaver, Pa.; one brother-in-law, Dale Bennett and his wife Julie of Washington, D.C.; one grandson, Quentin Peter Dzick-Shimko of Waunakee, Wis.; one granddaughter, Sydney Lillian Dzick-Shimko of Waunakee, Wis. and several nieces and nephews.
Bob was predeceased by his parents and his youngest brother, Tommy who died in 1958.
There will be no public calling hours or funeral service. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
Bob's family would like to thank the staff at Meadowbrook for their compassionate care.
