Robert W. Gibbs
Robert W. Gibbs, 86, of Sebring, Fla. and formerly of Westville, passed away July 10, 2016 after a short illness. He was born August 2, 1929 in Westville, the son of Cecil and Hazel King Gibbs. He attended the District #7 Pilfershire School on the Westville-Trout River Road, graduating from Franklin Academy in 1945. In 1950 he graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Engineering. After graduation from Cornell he was employed by Swift Corporation. Mr. Gibbs is a Korean War Veteran. He served from 1951 to 1953 in the Army Quartermaster Corps. in Japan, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded a Letter of Commendation, dated 29 Feb. 1951, for his devotion to duty and superior performance. He finished first in his class at the Eta Jima Specialists School, and was awarded Soldier of the Month in November 1951 for his exemplary work at the Tokyo Quartermaster Depot. Upon leaving the Army he was employed by Portland Cement Association and the U.S. Steel Agrichemical Division where he received numerous Distinguished Salesman Awards for consistently exceeding sales quotas. He later was employed by the Franklin County Probation Department and retired from the N.Y.S. Department of Corrections In 1992. Besides his parents; he was predeceased by four brothers, Floyd, Gordon, C. Vernon, and Kenneth Gibbs. There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, July 25th at Riverside Cemetery on Rt. 37 in Westville(next to the Westvilie Historical Organization building) with Rev. Howard Cain officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Ft. Covington American Legion. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Constable Methodist Church or the Westville Historical Organization. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Spaulding Funeral Home of Malone.
