Rita T. Stangrover, 97, of the Military Turnpike, Plattsburgh, formerly of Pleasant Street, Peru, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, at the UVM Health Network, CVPH.
"Nana," as she was affectionately known to her grandchildren, was born in Schuyler Falls, Feb. 16, 1920, the daughter of Patrick and Goldie (Williams) Ledwith. Rita grew up on Burnt Hill, the eldest of six children. She took on great responsibilities at a young age and was influenced by the years of growing up during The Great Depression.
She worked for many years at Montgomery Wards in the appliance department and later in the payroll office until her retirement.
She was a member of The Schuyler Falls Home Bureau, The Women's Bowling Space League, and The Lyon Mountain Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.
Nana and "Poppi Ted" were fortunate to enjoy many years of traveling the United States and Canada during their 45 years of marriage. Nana loved to cook and prepare meals for her family. She shared her love of canning and baking with her grandchildren. Rita enjoyed crafts, cards, and crossword puzzles. In her earlier years she also loved to dance, the jitterbug being her favorite.
Left to cherish the memory of Rita are, her daughter, Faye Lawrence of Plattsburgh; son, Gary Thornhill and companion Carol Denton of AuSable Forks; grandchildren, Dana (Cheryl) Lawrence, Dena (Thomas) Tedford, Darcy (Jeremy) Way, Brian (Sandy Shields) Thornhill and Traci (Mike) Lareau; 20 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Makara; three sisters-in-law, Bonnie Ledwith, Lorraine Spooner, and Jean Foster; three brothers-in-law, Tim Craig, Grahm (Holly) Stangrover, and Brad (Babe) Stangrover; numerous nieces and nephews; and her special caregiver, Lisa Hendrie.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Ivan Thornhill; second husband, George "Ted" Stangrover; son-in-law, Willis "Bill" Lawrence; and siblings, Helen Paro, Pauline Craig, Raymond "Bud" Ledwith, and Robert "Bob" Ledwith, and brother-in law, Dan Foster.
At Rita's request there will be no public calling hours or service.
