Rita's Story

Rita M. Edwards, 93, of the Calkins Road, Peru. We celebrate the life of Rita Edwards who finished this part of her journey to the Lord on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now a merited crown awaits me."
Rita was born in Albany, April 16, 1924, the daughter of Patrick and Mae (Mitchell) O'Neill. She also spent a great part of her childhood on Buck Hill. She has been a longtime resident of Peru. Her life was dedicated to her family but she also shared in the lives of many families in our area as she helped with domestic duties in their homes.
She is pre-deceased by her mother and father, Patrick and Mae (Mitchell) O'Neill; her husband, Harold; and brother, Alfred; and so many other we remember.
On Easter Sunday, she celebrated her 93rd Birthday and we can now rejoice that she can share in the resurrection of the Lord.
She is survived by her three sons who were very important to her on this journey. Gary Edwards and wife Nancy, and their children Shawn and wife Susan and Amy and husband Todd; Timothy Edwards and his children Zebulin and Stephanie and Otis; Guy "Bill" Edwards and his special friend Daniel. She was blessed to have six great-grandchildren. Her sister, Joan Provost was a constant companion as they traveled together especially on Saturday's. Her nieces Colleen Cringle and Freida Mooney and Linda Santor were an important part of her family.
We laughed when we spoke of her extended families who she shared many years of helping in their homes. She always spoke so highly of Jack and Fran Baroody, and their children. She also shared in the lives of David Hammock's family and watched them grow into fine adults.
We invite you to share in a Mass for her on Monday, May 1st, 2017 at St. John's Church in Plattsburgh beginning with a gathering time of 11 AM and Mass following at 12 PM. We invite all those attending to share in a luncheon held afterwards at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in the memory of Rita Edwards to the Plattsburgh Animal Rescue and Welfare Service at PO Box 2341, Plattsburgh, NY 12901.
Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru, 643-9055.
