Orville J. "Bing" Gload Jr., 84, of Champlain, N.Y., passed away May 17, 2019, at UVM-CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, N.Y. He was born Sept. 4, 1934, to the late Elizabeth (Peters) and Orville J. Gload Sr. Bing was dedicated to serving our country and local communities throughout his life. He will be remembered as a hunter and fishing enthusiast and for his passion for collecting antiques.
Bing graduated high school from Mount Assumption Institute in Plattsburgh and attended Auburn Community College. In 1957, he served in the United States Army, stationed first in Korea. Later he was stationed at Fort Meade, Md., where he served alongside the National Security Agency. Bing received a Good Conduct Medal and honorable discharge in 1960. He was employed by the New York State Department of Corrections and retired as Deputy Superintendent for Security at the Watertown Correctional Facility. Bing later served six years as village Justice for Champlain. He was dedicated to the mission of the Champlain Emergency Medical Services and served on the board of directors for ten years, six as chairman.
Bing was a lifetime member of the New York State Magistrates Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1418 in Champlain, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree in Bishop Wadham's General Assembly in Plattsburgh, Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree Post 3525 in Champlain, Plattsburgh Elks Lodge 621, and AMVETS Post 1814 in Plattsburgh.
Including his parents, Bing is predeceased by one sister, Carole A. Patnode. He is survived by his companion Kay Papin; two nephews, Michael Patnode (Gretchen Sando) of Peru, N.Y., and Steven Patnode of Plattsburgh; his niece Susan Moore (Jeffrey) of Plattsburgh; and brother-in-law James A. Patnode of Plattsburgh.
There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Mary's Church in Champlain at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2019. Interment will occur privately at a later date at convenience to the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Champlain EMS Department. Arrangements are in the care of M.B.
