Mildred "Millie" Mulligan, 94, after battling all phases of dementia for 22 years, was called to eternal peace with our Lord Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017. Millie was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Sept. 25, 1923, to Stanley Chmiel and Mae (Jenczka) Chmiel. Millie moved to the North Country in 2008, residing at Pine Harbour Assisted Living. She quickly fell in love with Michigans and North Country hospitality.
Millie graduated from Fosdick Masten High School in Buffalo and attended Bryant and Stratton Business School in Buffalo. During World War II, she worked for Curtiss Wright Aviation in Buffalo. In 1948, she married Robert "Bob" Mulligan in Ithaca, N.Y. After raising three young children, Millie returned to work as an administrative assistant for East Islip School District on Long Island. During her 22 year career at East Islip, she was the secretary to five School Superintendents.
In retirement, Millie and Bob spent ten wonderful years traveling to Florida for winter, trips to Europe, Hawaii, and Bermuda. Millie was Bob's caregiver for the last three years of his life, until his death in March, 1997.
Millie was predeceased by her parents and her husband Bob. She is survived by her son, Kevin Mulligan and Barbara of Chazy, N.Y., her daughter, Karen Mulligan-Syrkin and Stephen of Brooksville, Fla., Terrence Mulligan and Peggy of Westampton, N.J. Grandchildren include Sean Mulligan, Timothy Mulligan and Katie (Mulligan)Abbott, Brent Syrkin, Ryan Mulligan and Rachel Mulligan. Millie is also survived by her older sister, Alice Donohue, of McLean, Va., and a very dear niece, Alyce Bassoff. Millie was also blessed with six great-grandchildren.
Words cannot describe the gratitude Millie's family holds for the staff at Pine Harbour (2008-2014) and the staff at Chestnut Grove in Meadowbrook Healthcare. Their tender loving care and attention to Millie was incredible.
