Merritt H. Williams, 91, formerly of Beekman Towers, Plattsburgh, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2017, at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh.
He was born in Lake Placid, Aug. 15, 1925, the son of the late Burt and Lila (Banker) Williams. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946.
He married the former Irene Martineau, Aug. 7, 1948. She predeceased him, July 8, 2002.
Prior to his military service he worked in farming. Following his discharge he was a heavy equipment operator for Hazeyray Shores in Plattsburgh, and later worked for Nestle in Milford, Conn., retiring in 1986.
Merritt was a member of the American Legion Post 20 in Plattsburgh, and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 125 also in Plattsburgh. He enjoyed bowling.
Left to cherish the memory of Merritt are three sisters, Florence Denton of Lakeland, Fla., Laura Roe of Sloanville, N.Y., and Joyce Peck of Jay, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Kay Martineau of Champlain, N.Y.; brother-in-law, Hector Martineau and his wife Rosella of Morrisonville, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his spouse and parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, Raymond, Paul, Malcolm, and Burt Williams; and two sisters, Beatrice Green and Alma Laurence.
Calling hours will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, August 7, at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A service will follow at 2 p.m. in the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel. Military honors will be accorded at the Hamilton Veterans Memorial, following the service, with committal prayers and burial in the Schuyler Falls Cemetery.
