Melita L. Gowett, 90, of Plattsburgh, N.Y., passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at the UVM CVPH Medical Center with her devoted family by her side. She was born in Karlsruhe, Germany, on April 19, 1927, the daughter of Karl and Lina (Kutterer) Linder.
Melita grew up in Germany, where she met and married her husband Donald Gowett before moving to the United States in 1949. Together they founded, owned and operated Gowett's Furniture Warehouse Showroom for many years. In retirement, Melita devoted her life to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and loved to cook for her family. She especially enjoyed being neighbor, nanny, mentor, and friend to her great-granddaughter Louisa, who was always by her side.
She was predeceased by her parents, her cherished husband, Donald, and her brothers, Rudi and Gerhardt Linder of Germany.
Melita is survived by her daughters, Mary Carlisto and her husband George, and Elaine Thume and her husband Robert; her grandchildren, Melita Mercier and her husband Frank, Donald Carlisto and his wife Angie, Michael Carlisto and his wife Stephanie, Gary LaRoque, and Rebecca Desautels and her husband Joel; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Harrison, and Nash Carlisto, Luke and Emma Carlisto, Louisa Mercier; as well as her sister, Hannelore Boni of Buffalo and brother Reinhard Linder, who resides in Germany.
At Melita's request there will be no public calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, March 12, 2018, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church. Burial will be in the spring in the parish cemetery.
