Leonard R. Tavernier, 94, of Altona, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, at his home.
Born in the Town of Churubusco, N.Y., on Jan. 23, 1924, he was the son of Frank E. and Agnes S. (Nichols) Tavernier.
He was married to Shirley M. (Trombley) Spinner Oliver Tavernier on June 12, 1982, in Holy Angels Church. She predeceased him on Sept. 17, 2013.
Leonard was a farmer in Chateaugay for many years and a hobby farmer in Altona after his marriage to Shirley.
Leonard is survived by his stepchildren, Sandra Spinner of Altona, Charles Spinner and his wife Terry of Altona, Gerald Spinner and his wife Kathy of Altona and Dean and his wife Susan of Altona; 16 grandchildren, Gregory Spinner and his wife Jennifer, Angela Mercay, Matthew Kilmer, Kerry Hupp, Arliss Spinner and his wife Kelly, Rueben Spinner and his wife Amanda, Adam Spinner, Charles Spinner, Jessica Spinner and her husband Anthony Basto, R. Jamie Palmer, Stephen and his wife Raquelle, Jason Spinner, Emily Spinner, Timothy and his wife Qiuying, Rebecca and Abigail Spinner; several great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Floyd Trombley and his wife Dorothy of Satsuma, Fla.
Besides his wife Shirley, he was predeceased by his parents, Frank E. Tavernier and Agnes S. (Nichols) Tavernier; his sister Rita Tavernier; his stepson Edward J. Spinner, his stepdaughter Deborah M. Palmer; five sisters-in-law, Mildred and Evangeline Prue, Betty Boyea, Esther Trombley and Elnora Smith; seven brothers-in-law, Leonard, Ransom, Richard H., Asa, Ovid, Herbert and Horace Trombley; grandchildren, Nathan Kilmer and Lucas Kilmer.
Leonard loved dancing and traveling with Shirley and most recently listening to old country music and reminiscing of old times.
Calling hours will be held at the Chateaugay Funeral Home on Thursday, March 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. A prayer service will immediately follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ted Crosby officiating.
Spring burial will take place at Immaculate Heart Cemetery, Churubusco.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Altona Volunteer Fire Dept. 480 Devil's Den Rd., Altona, N.Y.
