Leon E. Carter Sr., 81, of Plattsburgh, passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2017, at Meadowbrook Healthcare with his loving family by his side. He was born in Ellenburg, N.Y., on June 21, 1935, the son of William and Ethel (Miller) Carter.
He attended Ellenburg Central School. He operated a dairy farm and also was a logger for over 20 years. In 1994 he began working at Wal-Mart as an assembler, retiring in 2010. Leon loved to travel in his motor home and go camping. His greatest love was spending time with family.
He is predeceased by his parents, first wife, Gladys (Barnes) Carter, his daughter, Denise Carter, his son, Daniel Carter, his grandson, Joseph Michael Depo, his sister, Hilda Lagasse and her husband Raymond, his brothers, Edwin Carter, Loyal Carter and his wife Noella, his sister, Lenette (Carter) Germaine Butts King and husband Francis, and his daughter-in-law, Marsha Threlkeld Carter.
Leon is survived by his wife, Rita Kemp-Carter, his brother, Floyd Carter, sisters, Louella Germaine and Darlene Labombard and her husband Dale, sister-in-law, Betty Carter, his children: Leon "Eddie" Carter Jr. and his wife Kay, Tom Carter and his wife Susan, Pamela Depo and her husband Michael, David Carter and companion Kathy Cinney, Donna Siskavich and her husband Frank, Diane Hotte and her husband John, Terri Favro and her husband Lanny, William Carter and his companion Annemarie Peer, his stepchildren: James Kemp and wife Dawn, Albert Kemp and his wife Mary, Keith Kemp and his wife Shirley, Russell Kemp, Kenneth Kemp and wife Snow, Daniel Kemp and his wife Denise, 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 16 step grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad Street in Plattsburgh, N.Y. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, at St. Edmund's Church in Ellenburg, N.Y. Entombment will follow at Whispering Maples Mausoleum.
