John's Story

Text size

John R. Dockum, 75, of Au Sable Forks, N.Y., passed away Sunday, November 19th in Lakeland, Fla. He was born May 3, 1942, in Au Sable Forks, N.Y., the son of John E. and Evelyn (Seguin) Dockum. John married Peg McClatchie of Westport, N.Y., in 1976 and he was a lifelong resident of Au Sable Forks.
John was an avid outdoorsman and was always happiest in the woods chasing rabbits, raccoon, or birds with his beagles, hounds, and bird dogs. He was a simple man who on many occasions quipped that he wished he had been born a hundred years earlier when life was less complicated and a handshake was a man's bond. He worked hard throughout his life and loved his family. John will also be remembered for the commonsense approach he brought to the bench as the Town of Jay's Justice. His service as Town Justice was something he was very proud of and he enjoyed his tenure immensely.
John was predeceased by his parents and one brother (Thomas A. Dockum, 1945). He is survived by his wife, Peg, of 41 years; two sisters, Joyce (Norman) Doege of West Fork, Ark., and Linda (Gary) Whisher of Au Sable Forks, N.Y.; one brother, Rod (Glenda) Dockum of Au Sable Forks, N.Y.; one daughter, Marybeth (Ronny) Beyer of Williamsville, N.Y.; two sons, Thomas (Ellen) Dockum of Fairport, N.Y., and Warren Haseltine of Orlando, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Grant Beyer, Gretchen Beyer, Jake Dockum, and Joshua Dockum.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 10 to 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, December 2nd at the Thwaits Zaumetzer Funeral Home in Au Sable Forks. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the Holy Name Catholic Church in Au Sable Forks, N.Y., with a burial service to be held immediately following at the Fairview Cemetery. A reception will be held at the American Legion in Au Sable Forks following the burial service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Au Sable Forks Volunteer Fire Department or the American Heart Association.
