Irene Loretta (Thaw) Campbell, 89, of Churubusco, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, at the Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, N.Y.
Born on Dec. 13, 1928, at the Summit Hotel (Churubusco Hotel) in Churubusco, N.Y., owned by her grandparents, Peter and Rose (Recore) Lagree. She was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Lagree) Thaw.
She was married to Robert P. Campbell on May 11, 1957, in North Tonawanda, N.Y. He predeceased her in 2012.
Irene spent her early years growing up between North Tonawanda and Churubusco, N.Y.
She graduated from North Tonawanda High School and Secretarial School in Buffalo, N.Y. She worked at the Wurlitzer Jutebox Corporation. Once married she moved to Churubusco and raised a family on the Campbell Brothers Farm.
She enjoyed bowling at the Chateaugay Bowling Alley. She was a member of the Churubusco Adult Club and Churubusco Home Bureau. She was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Churubusco.
Mrs. Campbell is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William and Carol Campbell of Jefferson, Md.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Gene Nichols of Churubusco; three grandchildren, Nicholas Campbell of Jefferson, Md., Patrick Campbell and his wife Elizabeth of Mt. Airy, Md., Elizabeth Nichols of Churubusco; two great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Brock Campbell of Mt. Airy, Md.; an aunt, Virginia Lagree of Churubusco; two nephews, Daniel Thaw and his wife Noreen and family of Bumpass, Va., and Samuel Thaw and his wife Lisa of Wethersfield Springs, N.Y.; a goddaughter, Melissa Lagree Peryea; 3 sisters-in-law, Dorothy Campbell of Syracuse, N.Y., Eunice Duncan of Canisteo, N.Y., Gladys Weinman and her husband Tom of Manlius, N.Y.; 3 brothers-in-law, John S. Campbell and his wife Ann of Churubusco, Ross Carter of Plattsburgh, Bob DeSeyn of Hammondsport, N.Y.; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Campbell was predeceased by her husband, parents, a brother, William and his wife Betty of Weathersfield Springs, N.Y., 3 sisters-in-law, Margaret Dubois and her husband Bob of Dallas, Texas, Alice Carter of Ellenburg, N.Y., Mildred DeSeyn of Hammondsport, N.Y.; 2 brothers-in-law, Ray and Glyndora Campbell of Nyack, N.Y., Richard Campbell of Churubusco; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services are private and at the convenience of the family.
Burial will take place at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cemetery in the spring.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Churubusco Fire Department.
