Ida I. Gifford

December 15, 1926 - August 04, 2018

Ida I. Gifford Ida Iwilda (Macklin) Gifford, 91, was called home by her Savior on August 4th, passing peacefully with attentive family members in prayerful vigil. Ida was born December 13th, 1926, in Pender, Neb., the youngest of seven children born to Daniel and Agnes (Pollock) Macklin. A 1943 graduate of Pender High School, Ida attended both Simpson College and Wayne State College, graduating in 1947 with a degree in Chemistry. Ida married Richard Dallas Gifford in August 1947 at the United Methodist Church in Pender, Neb. Married for over sixty-four years, Ida and Richard had three children, Peggy Eileen, Richard Scott, and Ferris Duane.
Ida was a career educator, teaching in Public Schools for over 37 years in Nebraska and New York State, and four years at the American Cooperative School in Monrovia, Liberia, from 1964-1968. Earning a Master's Degree in Education from Michigan State University in 1970, Ida began teaching Remedial Reading at Beekmantown in 1971, retiring after twenty-one years in 1992. An early practitioner of Direct Instruction, Ida delighted in the success of her students and played a critical role in the development of reading programs in the Beekmantown Central School System during the 1970s and 1980s.
A faithful Christian for many years, Ida served God in numerous capacities, including teaching Sunday school and playing the piano for numerous congregations as well as a music ministry with her late husband, to area nursing homes. During her four years in Liberia, Ida provided the musical accompaniment on an accordion, learning a new instrument to serve God in a church with few resources. Since 1999, Ida had been a congregant at the Nazarene Church in Plattsburgh.
She was a woman who loved her grandchildren and cherished spending time with them, whether helping to tutor in Algebra, or teaching to play the piano, or just comforting them through times of struggle, gramma was always there.
Born to a farming family, Ida was a natural and passionate gardener, leaving to her posterity numerous gardens of flowering plants that delight the eyes and engage the senses. Ida was a current member of the Saranac Chapter of the DAR and played an active role in Chapter events and activities.
Ida was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard, a daughter, Peggy Eileen, her parents, and six siblings. Ida is survived by her two sons, R. Scott Gifford and his wife Renee of Plattsburgh, Ferris D. Gifford and his wife Deborah of Elizabethtown, five grandchildren, Alex, Timothy, Aaron, Anelise, Candace; two step grandchildren, Kayla and Jesse, and six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
