Howard "Pete" Elias Barber
Pete graduated from Ellenburg Central School in 1960 and then went to work for Baily Motors in Dannemora where he remained as parts and service manager for 15 years.
In November 1963 he joined the U.S. Army Reserve, becoming an army cook.
On June 6, 1964, he married his sweetheart, Mary Laura Eggleston, at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora. In 1970 he started a family business (Pete's Sales & Service) in Dannemora, which remained active and successful for 35 years under the operation of Pete, his wife and children.
He was elected to the office of Highway Superintendent for the Town of Dannemora in January 2004, an office he held for 9 years, retiring due to health problems.
In 2000 he and his wife built a lovely home on the lake in Chazy Lake where he also built a wood working shop, known as Pete's Wood 'N' Stuff. Many residents in the area have enjoyed many of his wonderful creations. Due to the onset of dementia, he had to give up his woodworking in 2015. In 2004 he helped to organize a band, called "The Back Porch Band," for which he was their emcee and played the mandolin and rhythm guitar for ten years. Pete was known as the Man who could fix anything.
He also has been a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus as a 3rd degree knight.
Besides his wife, Pete is survived by his three children and their spouses, Bruce and Sonya (Noel) Barber of Dannemora, Amy O'Neill and Keith O'Neil of Mooers, and Perry and Suzanne (LaDuke) Barber of Dannemora. Also a very special granddaughter, Janyll Barber of Dannemora. He is also survived by his two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Barber of Malone, Jane Barber LaLonde of Potsdam, brother-in-law Danny and sister-in-law Jo Eggleston of Saranac and sister-in-law Barbara and brother-in-law George Malloy of Albuquerque, N.M., and several nieces and nephews.
Pete was predeceased by his parents, brothers Tony Barber of Malone and Wilmer (Bud) Barber of Dannemora, many aunts, uncles, cousins and parents-in-law, Millard and Eleanor Eggleston of Dannemora.
