Howard "Duke" C. Miller Jr., PhD, of Elizabeth Street, Plattsburgh, passed away peacefully on Sept. 17, 2019, at UVMHN-CVPH Medical Center with his family and wonderful staff of comfort care by his side. He was born in Latham, N.Y., on March 18, 1932, to Howard C. Miller Sr., and Pearl (Weaver) Miller.
He graduated from Gloversville High School and furthered his education at Union College and went on to get his Doctorate from Lehigh University in English and Poetry. After graduation he had a long and distinguished career teaching at SUNY Plattsburgh for 40 years where he was involved in many committees throughout his career.
We can picture him now...bowling at North Bowl Lanes, fishing at Marine Village, sitting in the Adirondack chair at Talcott in hope that Guinness wouldn't send him into the lake. He enjoyed writing articles for his grandson Jason's Clifton Commentator, dancing with grandson Josh and great-grandson Gunnar to "Jerimiah was a Bullfrog", teaching his grandson Ryan "Puff the Magic Dragon" on the piano and hand written snail mail with his grandson Kelly from Spain. Duke composed countless "Letters to the Editor" expressing his opinions that remain unpublished.
He is survived by his wife, Myrna (Wrisley) Miller, son Calvin (Kathy) and daughter Jennifer (David) Baker; his grandchildren, Jason (Jenn), Ryan (Kendra), Kelly (Elena) Miller, Joshua (Christina) Baker, his great-grandchildren, Olivia, Jackson, Aidan, Isabella, Warren, Clara-Miller, and Gunnar Baker; sister, Vrenda Marshall, two nephews that were like sons to Duke, Paul and Howie Dingman. On Aug. 21, 1989, he became father to Myrna's children, Loren (Terry), Brian and Lori (Ray), his grandchildren, Matt (Amy), Emily (Andy), Tamara (Rusty), Kaitlyn Wrisley, Chris (Toni), Erin (Jerry); great-grandchildren, Audrey, Lily, Ava, Elsie, Adeline, Levi, Haley, Calvary, and Rayya.
He was predeceased by his larger than life first wife, Bernie Kucel Miller, grandson Jonathan Lee Miller, sister Ruth Ellen Hawley and daughter Kim Wrisley Chase.
A celebration of his life will be Friday, Sept. 20, 2019, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the CVPH Medical Center Foundation.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad Street, Plattsburgh, NY 12901.

Calvin, Kathy & boys, we were sad to see your Dad has passed. We remember seeing him at the hockey rink or baseball field. Seems like yesterday. Sorry for your loss.

To all the Miller family,
We were so sorry to hear of Mr. Miller’s passing. What a friendly, outgoing man he was. He dearly loved his family and was such a proud dad and grandpa. We know he will be missed deeply. Please remember the good times and keep them deep within your heart.
