Helena's Story

Helena T. Penalis, 86, of the Vilas Home, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017 at the UVHN-CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.
She was born in Plattsburgh on June 7, 1931, the daughter of Michael and Anna (Golovach) Penalis.
Helena graduated from Lyon Mountain High School. She advanced her education and received her Bachelors of Science Degree from Cornell University. Helena continued her education and received her Masters of Science Degree from Ohio State University. She became a College Instructor at Michigan State University and eventually moved on to become Manager of Sales Planning and Training with Corning Glass Works, Corning, N.Y. Her career with Corning sent her to all parts of the world including assignments in various US locations as well as Japan and Europe. During her career she was listed in Who's Who in American Women 1972-1973 as well as a regional officer in American Women in Radio and Television.
Upon returning to her home in Lyon Mountain she immersed herself in the place of her birth and went on to become the author of "The History of the Hamlet of Lyon Mountain". She enjoyed many years of retirement at the family homestead in Lyon Mountian with her dear sister and best friend, Frances Penalis.
Helena was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Michael; and her sister, Frances.
There will be no public calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 27, 2017 at 10 am at St. Bernard's Church in Lyon Mountain with burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Bernard's Church.
