Grace's Story

Grace Irene Drummond, 90, of Nevada Oval, Lake Forest, Plattsburgh, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at the UVM Health Network, CVPH in Plattsburgh, under the loving care of her daughter, Carolyn Cowin-O'Brien.
She was born in the Hamlet of Wadhams, Town Of Westport, Feb. 2, 1927, the daughter of Moss Kirby and Celia (Pelkey) Hammond. She attended Westport Central School, graduating in 1945.
Grace worked at Champlain National Bank (Lake Champlain National Bank) from 1959 until her retirement in 1983. She purchased property in Essex, NY in 1969 and became involved in community service, serving in various capacities for over 40 years - with the Adirondack Art Association, the Town of Essex Republican Committee, the Essex Initiatives, Secretary to the Town Planning Board, and member of the Zoning Board of Appeals. She was elected Town Clerk/Tax Collector and served in that capacity for 6 years. She was elected Town Assessor, became NYS Certified and served in that capacity for 10 years, retiring at age 85. She was a long-time member of the Essex Community/United Methodist Church, Essex, NY, a dedicated member of the Essex Community Church Organ Concert Series serving as financial secretary for over 25 years and was a member of Iroquois Chapter #562, Order of Eastern Star, Essex, NY for over 50 years.
Left to cherish the memory of Grace are, her daughter, Carolyn Cowin-O'Brien of Plattsburgh; son-in-law, Paul Kirby of Peru; grandson, Brad Hurlburt and his daughter, Willa Ruth Hurlburt of Keene; and a great niece, Elizabeth Decker her husband David and their son, Noah and daughter Mackenzie. She was married to Frederick "Bill" Drummond for 45 years, and also survived by his children, Gay (Richard) Olcott, Beth (Edward) Marvin, living in Elizabethtown, and Timothy (Joann) Drummond living in Palm Coast, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and their spouses; and many great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Vickie Ruth Kirby, Friday, Nov. 6, 2009; and 11 siblings.
Relatives and friends may call Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017 from 11 to noon at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A funeral service will follow at noon in the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor John E. Hunn, officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in the Wadhams Riverside Cemetery.
