Geraldine N. "Gerry" Wright
She was born in New York City, Feb. 22, 1932, the daughter of Edward and Almira (Dancause) Nolan. The family moved to Chateaugay, N.Y., in the late 1930's following the death of her father, Edward Nolan. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Lake Placid, N.Y., where she graduated from Lake Placid High School in 1950. She moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she worked as a professional fashion model and night club singer for several years before majoring in Education at SUNY Plattsburgh. She obtained a master's degree and taught briefly at A.A. Kingston Middle School in Potsdam, N.Y., before taking a teaching position at Peru Jr./Sr. High School in Peru, N.Y., in 1956.
She married State Trooper Richard E. "Dick" Wright, August 26th, 1956 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Lake Placid and used her teaching income to help pay for him to get his own master's degree in Mathematics Education.
Gerry was a home economics teacher at Peru Central Schools from 1956 - 1991, teaching over 3,500 students during that time. In her later years of teaching some of her students were the grandchildren of some of the first students she ever taught.
She was a member of the New York State United Teachers, American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association.
Gerry enjoyed music, Broadway shows, singing and dancing, sewing, needlepoint, embroidery, clothing design, graphic design, serving charitable causes and being a 2nd mom to many of her students.
She loved walking every day and joined her husband and sons mountain climbing. She once climbed 4,734' tall Gothics mountain in an Adirondack winter!
Left to cherish the memory of Gerry are, her loving husband, Richard Wright; two sons, Neil and Mark Wright; grandchildren, Marie Thomson, and twins, Elizabeth and Nicholas Wright; daughters-in-law, Viyachat and Laurette Wright; niece, Lynn (Kirk) Cole; and nephews, Michael and Steven Kirk.
Gerry was predeceased by her son, Scott Wright; sister, Ann (Nolan) Kirk; and brother-in-law Fred Kirk.
Relatives and friends may call Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A celebration of her life will follow at 11 a.m. in the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel. A reception will follow at the Pizza Palace, Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the "Poor Pooch and Strapped Cat Fund" (her own creation) for the care and treatment of animals with no financial support, care of the Saranac Veterinary Clinic, PO Box 67, Saranac, NY 12981.
