Gerald J. Garrand

June 22, 1933 - October 04, 2018

Gerald J. Garrand Gerald (Jerry) James Garrand, born June 22, 1933, son of the late Peter and Cora Breyette of Mooers, N.Y., passed on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, at his summer home in Cliff Haven.
Jerry attended Mooers Central School. After completing school, he had many various jobs in the Mooers area and worked for the Tree Preservation Co. of Elmsford, N.Y., for several years. In June 1952, he married the love of his life, Margaret Pellerin, daughter of the late Henry J. and Lia (Hebert) Pellerin. In September of 1953, they moved to Rochester, N.Y., with their infant daughter Kathy. Jerry had accepted employment with the Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. He worked in the Y-4 dome division of the company and became supervisor of that division.
Jerry and Margaret, having only lived in the North Country, enjoyed their years spent living in Rochester, making friends and enjoying the beauty of the culture of the area. Their daughter, Debbie was born while living in Rochester.
In 1958, Jerry decided that factory work was not what he wanted to pursue long term so he moved his family back to Plattsburgh. In July 1958, he became proprietor of the College Texaco Service Station at Broad and Rugar Streets. With the college expansion in 1962, the business was terminated. He then operated the Shell Station at Broad and Oak Streets. His final service station was Garrand's ARCO at JFK Bridge and South Peru Sreet, which he operated for seven years.
In May of 1973, he was awarded the Toyota (dealer) franchise, which he owned and operated until September 2009. It was his being awarded the Toyota franchise that introduced Toyota to the North Country.
In February 1978, he purchased Plattsburgh Datsun from Curtis Elles, located on Margaret Street. In 1989, he built a new building and moved the business to Route 9 South and operated it until 2007 when he transferred it to his son, Mark.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Margaret, his daughters Katherine, Tim McCallister (deceased) and Deborah (Debbie) Randy Houle and Celine Houle, son Mark (Teresa) of Plattsburgh.
Also surviving are his grandchildren, Heather, Shawn Dubay, Krista (Keith Armstrong) Jeremy McCallister, Dean Jolly (son of Debbie), Geoffrey and Ryan Garrand (sons of Gary and Lisa Garrand). Mark's three children, Margaret Ann, Mark Jr. and Emily (Nate Whitten) and five great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Emiliee, Ryan Dubay and Kora and Kellen Armstrong. Also surviving is his younger brother Robert (Bob) and wife Debbie Garrand of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Naples, Fla.
Jerry was predeceased by his son, Gary in 2008, and his brothers, Melvin, Julius and Roger.
Jerry enjoyed boating, bowling, snowmobiling and the holidays. He especially enjoyed time spent with his children and grandchildren at their summer cottage on Lake Champlain.
As a Toyota and Nissan Dealer, Jerry and Margaret enjoyed many wonderful trips to new car showings and especially the 1979 trip to Tokyo, Japan, which was hosted by Toyota in celebration of 25 years of their business in the U.S.
His was a good life lived and enjoyed. His mantra was "I did it my way."
