Ford Cooper Balch

Events

Ford Cooper Balch was born to Ward Harvey Balch and Eloise Cooper Balch in Keene, N.Y., on Jan. 26, 1941. He died on July 16, 2018, in North Carolina with loving family. Ford grew up in Upper Jay, N.Y., and graduated from Lake Placid High School in 1958. Ford's parents were both teachers who had books lining their walls like a library. He was given his middle name after the Cooper family from Wilmington; Wilmington has the E.M. Cooper Memorial Library today, and it's fitting that Ford loved history, poetry, and literature all his life.
In 1962, Ford earned a pharmacy degree from Albany College of Pharmacy with honors and worked as a pharmacist for 38 years. He married Lena Bruce in 1969, and they resided in Upstate New York, Vermont and ultimately North Carolina. Ford enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, woodworking, reading, writing and spending time with his beloved wife, children and grandchildren. His love for the Adirondacks was always near and dear to his heart and was fondly depicted in the poetry and books that he passionately wrote in the last 15 years of his life.
Left to cherish his memory are his four children, Jennifer Balch Kirkland, Bruce Ward Balch, Barbara Ann Balch, and Karen Michele Bell; his sons-in-law, Wade Kirkland and Scott Bell, and daughter-in-law, Joanne Balch; his grandchildren, Michael and Haylea Kirkland; Kendra, Josh, Ben, and Jasmine Bradford; John, Brian, and Justin Balch; and Vivienne Bell; and his cousin Nancy Cooper Graham. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Lena Bruce Balch.
